La storia vede come protagonista Keiichi Maebara giovane ragazzo appena trasferito con la sua famiglia ad Hinamizawa; grazie ai suoi ottimi voti a scuola e il suo carattere socievole riuscirà presto a diventare amico di un gruppo di ragazze con cui passerà parecchio tempo, anche al difuori della scuola, questo lo porterà a scoprire diverse storie legate al paese che saranno negate dalle sue amiche che sembreranno nascondere sempre di più qualcosa; ma sarà alla festa del Watanagashi, già famosa per le strane morti che si verificano ogni anno, che il nostro protagonista vedrà con i propri occhi qualcosa di terribile che lo farà sprofondare nel panico e lo metterà in diversi guai. Seconda serie: Il ciclo infinito di odio e di morte che ha colpito il piccolo villaggio di Hinamizawa continua. L'unica testimone di tutte quelle tragedie, cerca con l'aiuto dei suoi amici di trovare una via d'uscita, senza sapere se ve n'è una. Il villaggio di Hinamizawa ha una popolazione di 2000 abitanti. Qui, il suono delle cicale può essere ascoltato nella tarda serata. Anche se a un primo colpo d'occhio il paese sembra normale, un orribile segreto è gelosamente celato dagli abitanti ai nuovi arrivati: la maledizione di Oyashiro-sama. While their life is mostly carefree and fun-filled, he begins to discover that things in Hinamizawa are not as they appear to be. During the annual Cotton Drifting Festival, Keiichi learns that there have been murders and disappearances for the past few years in the aftermath of the celebration. Referred to as "Oyashiro's Curse," the suspicious townsfolk say that those who anger Hinamizawa's patron god will be cursed to die or disappear. At first, he believes that such things are mere folk tales meant to scare misbehaving children. But when a murder and a disappearance occur after the festival and his friends refuse to talk about the strange events in the village, Keiichi begins to wonder if his new friends may have something to do with the horrific events—and if he might be the next to die. The story of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is divided into a total of eight chapters: four "Question" arcs and four "Answer" arcs. Each chapter keeps the same main characters, but ends in a different way. Hen presenta sostanzialmente due storie intrecciate fra di loro, entrambe focalizzate sui sentimenti e sulle relazioni dei personaggi ed entrambe caratterizzate dalla presenza di un fattore comune: la scoperta della propria omosessualità latente da parte dei due protagonisti del manga, Chizuru Yoshida e Ichirō Suzuki. Chizuru Yoshida è una normale ragazza del liceo, dalla spiccata sensualità ed enorme popolarità fra gli studenti della sua età dovuta anche dalla generosità del suo seno, che tuttavia si ritrova innamorata in maniera del tutto inattesa e non preventivata di una ragazzina appena trasferitasi con la madre da Fukuoka: l’innocente Azumi Yamada. Di per contro, la situazione di Suzuki sembra essere lo specchio al maschile della situazione di Chizuru. Egli è infatti un ragazzo eterosessuale, piuttosto popolare fra gli studenti della sua scuola e con un nutrito gruppo di ammiratrici, che tuttavia si ritrova a sua volta innamorato di un altro ragazzo, Yūki Sato, al punto da arrivare a convincersi che in realtà l'effeminato Sato sia una ragazza intrappolata in un corpo maschile.
