Adult Jean Grey Returns in Marvel’s Phoenix: Resurrection

The adult Jean Grey will make her return to the Marvel Universe in a five-issue series written by Matthew Rosenberg with art by Leinil Yu. Phoenix Resurrection arrives in stores Dec. 27, with covers by You and a variant by Arthur Adams.

“Matt came to us with a really interesting and unique approach to bringing Jean back,” senior editor Mark Paniccia said in an official statement. “It’s not what we expected, and plays to Matt’s biggest strengths as a storyteller. This is very cool mystery building to a mind-warping climax. And it has plenty of what you’d expect from an X-MEN epic of this magnitude. Action, romance, sacrifice, lots of X-Men and five great artists.”

“It’s such a mind-blowing honor to bring back the original Jean Grey,” Rosenberg said of working on his and Yu’s series. “I’ve been an X-Men fan my whole life and Jean is, in my mind, the true soul of the X-Men. So we aren’t taking this lightly. We’re going for that perfect balance of universe shaking epic and intimate personal drama that only the X-Men ever truly achieve. This is all hands on deck for the X-Men as every available member heads into battle for the soul of their team and maybe even the fate of the Marvel Universe.”

The Phoenix has seen a rise in profile across the Marvel Universe in recent months. Not only is the cosmic entity at the heart of the current Jean Grey serieshttp://www.cbr.com/jean-grey-secret-of-phoenix-revealed-x-men/ (written by Dennis Hopeless), which follows the adventures of a time-displaced teenage version of the popular original X-Man, it will also be part of the publisher’s upcoming Marvel Legacy one-shot. There, in a story by Jason Aaron and Esad RIbic, the Phoenix will be part of the original Avengers team from 1,000,000 BC. What’s more, she will be in a romantic relationship with Odin, a revelation readers first learned of in the Generations: Thor one-shot.

But that’s the Phoenix entity, not the long-dead adult Jean Grey. How she will be tied to the Phoenix power this time around, and what the implications her return has on the younger Jean Grey remain a secret for now, but fans should probably expect answers (and probably a few more questions) to be revealed in pages of both Phoenix Resurrection, and Jean Grey.
