For Fans of Stories With No Main Character

Durarara

Tokyo’s downtown district of Ikebukuro is awash in strange rumors, everything from colorless color gangs to a headless rider roaming town populate the rumors. For Mikado Ryuugamine who just moved there from Tokyo, he is but one witness to the district’s slew of strange events.

In both series, you follow a rather large number of characters that all operate around a town. While there is a general theme to the story, the plot is open and told through the different vantage points of the many characters. Both series have characters close to main characters, but no true main character.

Paranoia Agent

There is an urban legend going around in Musashino City where the infamous Shounen Bat rolls around on roller blades and beats people with his golden baseball bat. Numerous reports of his attacks have been reported, but the police have been unable to catch him. As the investigation continues and more people fall victim, paranoia begins to set in.

In Paranoia Agent there is one central aspect – the Shounen Bat – that keeps showing up in incidents. In Occultic;Nine there are a variety of incidents, all of which smack of the supernatural. Through the characters that bear witness to them, you are invited to investigate what is actually going on.

Boogiepop Never Laughs

There is an urban legend of an angel of death that releases people from their suffering – Boogiepop. The legends are true and when people start disappearing at a local school, the police think the kids are just runaways. However, the students at the school believe something more is happening.

Both series have their story told through the eyes of many different characters. The single events are told in a non-linear fashion through the characters and end up being excellent dark mysteries.

For Fans of Supernatural Mysteries

Chaos;Head

One day Takumi Nishijou hears about the brutal New Gen murders that have been occurring around the city. Although thinking it doesn’t involve him, strange events begin to go on around him that has him struggling to separate illusion from reality.

The semicolon isn’t the only thing that Chaos;Head and Occultic;Nine have in common. As they are both by the same author, you will note a lot of the same elements. Both tell tales that seemingly don’t make sense right up until they do and tell them through characters that all end up being connected in some way.

Serial Experiments Lain

Introverted Lain Iwakura finds herself one of many girls to receive an e-mail from classmate Chisa Yomoda, even though Chisa Yomoda recently committed suicide. Averse to technology, Lain soon finds herself able to enter the Wired, a network system similar to the internet. From there, her life gets turned upside down as she finds herself the target of mysterious men and mixed up in a series of cryptic mysteries.

In these series, you watch as the supernatural and the technological intersect in unexpected ways. While Serial Experiments Lain is much darker and infinitely more complex, you can detect the same themes in the stories they tell.

Ghost Hound

In the small village of Suiten, three boys with traumatic pasts learn how to let their souls travel in between the world they know and the mysterious Unseen World. The Unseen World is one of ghosts. However, the three boys aren’t the only things coming and going from this world. Ghosts are now also beginning to pass into the real world as well.

Both Ghost Hound and Occultic;Nine are series in which supernatural events start happening around a town. It brings characters together that are all seemingly interconnected by these events. However, Ghost Hound is more about the how while Occultic;Nine is more about the why.

For Fans of Unique Characters

Mekakucity Actors

After spilling soda on his keyboard and not being able to get a replacement online because of the Obon festival, Shintarou Kisaragi leaves his home for the first time in two years. However, he gets caught in a hostage situation where he is rescued by a group of teenagers with eye powers. Afterwards, he is forced to join up with them where he discovers that their abilities seem to be like pieces of a puzzle waiting to be put together.

While Mekakucity focuses on the powers and the people that wield them, Occultic;Nine focuses on the mysteries and why these specific people are involved. Of course, the real similarities are these oddball characters in both, they are eccentric and that leads to a lovely mix of light and dark moments.

Kiznaiver

Katsuhira Agata is a quiet teen whose ability to feel pain has vanished. One day, he, his friend Chidori, and four other teenagers are abducted and bound together by the Kizuna System. While not physically connected, their pain is. Now if one party member is injured, they all feel it.

Both series deal with human experiments in different ways, yet it is the characters that resulted from these experiments that you want to explore., The teens are bright and quirky, and each one has a mystery waiting for you.

Bakemonogatari

After being saved from a vampire attack, high school student Koyomi Araragi finds he has several supernatural side effects. While trying to live a normal life, he ends up catching a classmate after falling down the stairs and finds she is near weightless. Thus begins to his foray into a weird and wonderful world.

Bakemonogatari is outwardly more supernatural with its creatures, while Occultic;Nine is more mysterious. However, there is mystery abound in both of these series that you want to uncover. Furthermore, they have an array of characters and end up highly dialogue driven.
