Anime Series Like Back Street Girls

After disobeying their boss and messing up a job, three yakuza men are given a choice – commit suicide or go to Thailand and have a sex change to become female idols. They make the choice to go to Thailand and after grueling idol training, make their debut. Unfortunately for them, they are a hit!

While the animation could have used more love, if you truly revel in strange comedy, Back Street Girls is one for the books. If you are looking for similarly strange anime recommendations, then look no further.

For Fans of Secrets to Keep

Detroit Metal City

The popular indie band Detroit Metal City is known for captivating audiences with its dark death metal. The lead singer in particular, Johannes Krauser II, is infamous for being like a demon straight out of hell. However, unbeknownst to their many worshipers, Krauser’s normal self is the soft-spoken average college student Souichi. Switching between them leads this young man on a number of misadventures.

Both shows are about music and have good OSTs, but while death metal and idol music are not the same, the premises are similar. Both shows feature main characters that have to hide their true selves, though the main character switches back and forth where as the yakuza girls can’t.

Aggressive Retsuko

25-year-old red panda Retsuko is constantly faced with stress and misogyny at work while being forced to keep up the facade of a modest women. However, when it just becomes too much, she sings out that stress in a burst of death metal karaoke.

Another somewhat musical show, but like Detroit Metal City above, also a death metal bint to this one as well. However, again you find main characters that are pretty much forced to be someone else by their boss or society. They have to keep this facade up or otherwise there will be problems.

Zombieland Saga

For Sakura Minamoto, she started her day off normally, right up until she skipped outside and got hit by a speeding truck. She died of course, but 10 years later, she wakes up as… a zombie. However, her story is just beginning as a man wants her and several other undead girls from throughout Japan’s history to become a regional idol group to save Saga from becoming an obscure prefecture.

Do you like anime about idols that isn’t typical idol anime like Back Street Girls? Well, Zombieland Saga is like that. It is an idol group of zombie girls that were idols throughout Japanese history. Of course, like Back Street Girls, they have to hide their true selves, namely covering their zombie faces and scars with makeup.

For Fans of Yakuza

Hinamatsuri

One night, an object falls through space and time into the living room of dignified yakuza member Nitta. It turns out, this strange girl has psychic powers, but Nitta is reluctant to both take her in and make use of those powers.Respecting his decision to not use her as a tool, this girl, Hina, decides to help him as they begin their life together.

When Japan makes a yakuza anime, it rarely can create a normal one. Both Back Street Girls and Hinamatsuri are about yakuza men in odd situations. In Hinamatsuri,  he is saddled with an alien girl. I guess Nitta should be thankful he didn’t have to change his gender. Regardless, Hinamatsuri is less vulgar comedy, but still an amazing comedy none the less.

Gokusen

Kumiko Yamaguchi is smart, energetic, and starting her dream job as a teacher at Shirokiun Academy.Unfortunately, she soon learns that her class in this all-boys school is a cesspool of the worst delinquents in school. However, young Kumiko has a secret weapon, she is the heir apparent of a yakuza clan and knows how to handle rough men. Capable of both overpowering these thugs and getting them to listen, she is ready to change the lives of her students.

While Gokusen has some drama and takes itself seriously at times, it, too, is a yakuza series where a gang heir becomes a teacher, and as such, has to conceal her identity as a yakuza boss’s daughter. While not a selling point, it also has bad animation like Back Street Girls.

My Bride is a Mermaid

Michishio Nagasumi is living a normal life when he almost drowns on summer vacation. He is rescued by, of all things, a beautiful mermaid. Unfortunately, she is from a yakuza family that states if a human sees a mermaid, either the human or the mermaid must die. To save her life, Michishio agrees to marry the mermaid and become part of this crazy family.

Yet another weird scenario involving yakuza, but this time with mermaids! Unfortunately, no cute idol antics here as this is primarily a weird romantic comedy. However, as far as weird yakuza comedies go, the unexpected nature of it, like in Back Street Girls, is the real charm.

For Fans of Insane Comedy

Prison School

The Hachimitsu Private Academy has always been a prestigious all-girls school that is prized for its high quality education and ridged discipline. However, they are now accepting boys as well as girls. With a mere five boys in the schools, they think they are the luckiest men in the world. That is,until they get caught peeping and have their personal freedoms taken away in the brutal prison below the school.

Like the yakuza boys are firmly under the thumb of their boss, so, too, are the male students in Prison School under the thumb of the female student council. Both shows are vulgar and with building insanity that really manages to pull off a good ecchi comedy.

Cromartie High School

Takashi Kamiyama is your typical mild-mannered high school student. However, instead of living a boring normal life, he enrolls at infamous Cromartie High School, a school known for breeding thugs. It is this decision that sees the end of his normal high school days.

Thug characters and strange comedy, this is what these two series have in common. There is a lot of manly chest beating and the comedy often comes from the unexpected and the absurd. However, Cromartie is even more random than Back Street Girls.

Arakawa Under the Bridge

Kou Ichinomiya, as the son of a wealthy businessman, has vowed never to become indebted to anyone. However, when he falls in the river under Arakawa Bridge, someone dives in to save him, thus he owes his life to this person. She is a homeless girl named Nino who wants only one thing – to fall in love. In order to pay her back, he accepts her offer to be her boyfriend, thus moving out of his home and starting a new life under the bridge.

Homeless people and transgendered yakuza aren’t really the focus of many shows right? Well, both shows broke the glass ceiling, I guess. Likewise, both are absurd comedies where the most random and insane situations become the comedy.
