Anime Series Like Zombieland Saga

For Sakura Minamoto, she started her day off normally, right up until she skipped outside and got hit by a speeding truck. She died of course, but 10 years later, she wakes up as… a zombie. However, her story is just beginning as a man wants her and several other undead girls from throughout Japan’s history to become a regional idol group to save Saga from becoming an obscure prefecture.

If you like zombie shows and idol groups, then this is like, your perfect show. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get any more perfect than this. However, if you are looking for something similar, then check out these anime recommendations.

For Fans of Idols

Love Live

Chika Takami is a self-proclaimed normal girl with minimal interest in clubs and no discernible talent. However, after visiting Tokyo, she discovers a stage where even a normal girl like her can shine – school idols. Thus, she sets off on a mission to create her own high school idol group, but not without many obstacles along the way.

If Zombieland Saga has awoken a newfound love of idol groups, then perhaps Love Live, one of the more popular idol shows, is your next adventure. It is full of cute girls with unique stories, but sadly, they are not zombies.

Locodol

Nanko Usami is your average high school girl in the town of Nagarekawa. However, her uncle decides to try and make her a local idol, or locodol. By partnering with upperclassman Yukari Kohinata to form the idol unit, Nagarekawa Girls, they try to use their skills to climb to idol-hood.

Both of these shows are about men trying to make girls into idols. Of course, those girls don’t really want to at first, but they eventually learn to love the stage. Furthermore, both shows are also about using an idol to make a region seem more appealing.

AKB0048

After interplanetary war, Earth is in ruins. As such, humanity has fled looking for new planets. Somewhere on this journey, it was deemed that music was the source of evil. This gave rise to those who gave secret performances, such as the AKB0048, an idol group based on the original AKB48 of old Earth.

Anyone can make an anime about cute idol girls, right? But in this day and age, you need a twist. Both of these shows have that twist. It could be zombies, it could be making idol groups illegal. It is these “what if” scenarios that make it fun on a bun.

For Fans of “Cute” Zombies

Is This a Zombie?

One night, Ayumu is killed by a serial killer. Just as suddenly, he is brought back to life by a necromancer. To further complicate things, he also accidentally puts on a magical girl uniform and gains her powers. While she searches for a way to get her powers back, he is forced to fight evil in her stead.

Both shows are technically about zombies, but mostly they are just comedies. Of course, the zombies in Zombieland look a little more horrifying without their makeup. If you enjoy your zombie comedies, then have at it.

Sankarea

After his cat gets run over, Chihiro is convinced that he can make a potion to resurrect him. On his task to do so, he meets a wealthy girl from his school who comes to an abandon spot to yell in a well about her troubles every day. The two bond and she encourages him to continue his resurrection potion creation. Eventually, he succeeds after adding poisonous hydrangea leaves. Sanka, however, doesn’t know it has worked, and decided to kill herself with what should be a poisonous potion. Suddenly, Chihiro has a beautiful zombie on his hands.

While Zombieland is a comedy, through and through, Sankarea is more of a zombie love drama. Neither show is particularly scary as you would expect, but it still features zombies that are a bit out of their element and looking cute while doing it.

School Live

Yuki Takeya is in love with school life. She loves it so much that she joined the School Living Club with three other girls, their supervising teacher, and the club dog Taroumaru. This club makes the most of living at school. However, Yuki’s blissful school life is all a delusion. The real purpose of the School Living Club is to prevent Yuki’s fragile reality from shattering. In reality, these girls are surviving the zombie apocalypse by barricading themselves within the school.

Unlike Zombieland Saga where the zombies are quite cute, they are pretty terrifying in School Live. However, it is still moe girls surviving a zombie apocalypse, so you get your dose of cute and you get your dose of zombies.

For Fans of Horror Comedies

Junji Ito Collection

Sit down and gather round. You’ve read the legendary horror manga from Junji Ito, now watch a collection of his short stories come to life before your very eyes.

After the initial introduction in Zombieland’s first episode, you thought that maybe it would be a horror show. However, it turned into a comedy. Junji Ito Collection is about equal bits that. Some stories are scary, some are kind of hilarious, but all are dark.

Detroit Metal City

The popular indie band Detroit Metal City is known for captivating audiences with its dark death metal. The lead singer in particular, Johannes Krauser II, is infamous for being like a demon straight out of hell. However, unbeknownst to their many worshipers, Krauser’s normal self is the soft-spoken average college student Souichi. Switching between them leads this young man on a number of misadventures.

The easiest similarity here is that Zombieland’s first idol show is a death metal show. However, in reality, the biggest similarity is that both shows are black comedies. They are funny, but they are also a bit dark as well.

^ A legitimate line in the dub.

Ghost Stories

Satsuki and Keiichirou Miyanoshita move back to their mother’s hometown after her tragic death, it is there that the siblings find out that their mother banished a number of ghosts from the old school building, but suddenly they are all starting to reappear again. It is up to Satsuki and her new friends along with the help of her mother’s journal to seal them away again.

This only applies with the dub version of Ghost Stories. They did a funny dub that makes it the funniest horror anime you can watch. If you’d like to laugh more after Zombieland, then the dub version of Ghost Stories is up to the task while still telling some chilling stories.
