Static Shock Was Almost A Member of Bendis’ Young Justice Team

Brian Michael Bendis has revealed that Static Shock was almost a member of his upcoming Young Justice title over at his DC imprint, Wonder Comics.

Bendis provided the details during his spotlight panel at New York Comic Con on Saturday, indicating he called Milestone Entertainment to inquire if he could use Static Shock while it prepped its relaunch with the character as part of DC’s upcoming Milestone reboot. However, his request was declined.

Fans got an early glimpse of Static, courtesy of Eisner Award-winning artist Kyle Baker in June, teasing the ongoing series he has planned with writer Reginald Hudlin under the Earth M banner.

The Milestone relaunch was formally announced in October 2017 at New York Comic Con, with Earth M existing outside DC Universe continuity, in contrast to recent developments in which Static was a member of the Teen Titans. Static was created in 1993 by the late Dwayne McDuffie, Michael Davis, Cowan and Dingle as the flagship character for the Milestone imprint.

As Virgil Hawkins, the character faced the typical trials and tribulations of a teenager but with the added complication of suddenly gaining electricity-based superpowers. The character received his own animated series in 2000 that aired for four seasons, with Virgil voiced by Phil LaMarr. The character was integrated into the DC Universe in 2009, following Final Crisis, and also appeared in the Young Justice cartoon.

The Earth M imprint was originally scheduled to launch in the spring of 2017, but has since been delayed to an unspecified date.
